hey scouts,
here are the basic rules for the derby.
Derby date Wednesday January 24th. weigh in will be 24-48 hours earlier.
have fun. be creative. look online for inspiration.
Only "Cub Scout Derby Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits" #17006 may be used.
Each registered Cub Scout will receive one car kit. (If a mistake is made and a
replacement kit is needed, additional kits may be purchased at the Scout
Shop.)
§ Only one entry per scout.
§ This is a Cub/Parent project. The parent may help ONLY with:
Shaping the car, especially where power tools are used and placing the wheels
on the car and attaching lead weights to the car. The SCOUT should at least
design, sand and paint the car. Remember that winning a race is secondary to
having fun with your son and building his car.
CAR SPECIFICATIONS:
o Wheelbase: approximately 4-3/16 inches. The kit's axle slots must be
used. Wheel distance: approximately 1.75 inches between
wheels.
o Overall width: not exceeding 2.75 inches. Overall length: not
exceeding 7 inches. Overall height: not exceeding 3 inches (to pass
beneath electronic timers).
o Chassis clearance: 3/8-inch minimum. DO NOT ADD WEIGHTS TO THE
BOTTOM OF THE CAR without chiseling a recessed area for the weights to fit into.
Cars can drag on the center line of the track.
o Weight: Car must weigh in at 5 ounces or less.
o Wheels can be sanded smooth but not grooved. The width and shape of
the wheel tread cannot be changed, and wheels may not be hollowed out or
otherwise altered, other than necessary to clean injection by-product, etc. The car
may not ride on any type of springs, and must be freewheeling. Only wheels
and axles provided with the official Cub Scout kit are to be used. Only dry
graphite may be used as lubrication.
o ANY modifications to the wheels, such as hollowing them out or
narrowing or rounding the tread or hubs, are prohibited.
o Wheel bearings, washers, bushings or any wheel lubrication of any
kind (other than graphite powder) is prohibited.
o After weigh-in, the race officials will hold the racecar until race
time. No alterations will be allowed after the car is weighed and checked in.
The weight at weigh-in will be official. Identification numbers will be
furnished at weigh-in. The inspection team has the right to disqualify those cars
that do not meet official specifications.
